Pregnancy massage has a wide range of physiological, psychological and emotional benefits for Mum to be:
- It helps to alleviate stress on weight bearing joints and also assists in relieving many of the common discomforts experienced during pregnancy such as muscular discomforts, lower and upper back pain, leg cramps, stiffness, tension and knots, fatigue, neck pain and headaches.
- Increases blood circulation providing oxygen and nutrients to both Mother and baby.
- Helps to stabilise hormonal levels relieving stress and anxiety caused by the hormonal changes.
- Soothes and relaxes the nervous system by releasing endorphins into the body. As a result the expectant mother feels more relaxed and at ease and so will sleep more easily and more deeply.
Your pregnancy massage should be an enjoyable and relaxing experience for Mother and baby. You will be massaged on your side and will be fully supported where needed. Your therapist will keep you well covered at all times apart from the area being massaged. They will be aware of all trigger points and will avoid these. No aromatherapy oils will be used only pregnancy safe oils.
Do discuss any concerns you have with your therapist.
Always make sure your therapist is professionally trained in this area and fully insured; being a massage therapist does not mean you are qualified to give a pregnancy massage.
Pregnancy massage should not be undertaken until after 3 months.
If you have any doubts with regards to receiving treatment you can speak to your doctor or health visitor.
